Spanish consortium to build US$3.26 billion new airport in Ajman

The Spanish consortium, Withelake, will construct a new airport in a phased manner in the Emirate of Ajman in the United Arab Emirates, at an estimated cost of US$3.26 billion.

The construction work on the new airport will begin in the first half of 2009 and is scheduled for completion in 2012.

The first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed in 18 months and will include construction of a runway, the necessary infrastructure as well as stores and housing.

The second phase, expected to last 36 months, envisages the completion of works at the airport and the construction of shopping malls, offices and housing.

The airport, to be built on a build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis, will have a capacity to handle a minimum of one million passengers and 400,000 tonnes of cargo per year.
